Trackbacks and pingbacks were traditionally supposed to allow blogs notify each other of links. When you write an article and add the link to your friend’s blog, he or she will automatically receive a pingback in the comment moderation queue of their blog, with a link to your website notifying them of the post.
However, it is no longer the case, as they are now being used by spammers to send fake trackbacks and pings from spam websites. WordPress offers some help for this problem, but it isn’t enough. Akismet does not make your blog immune to fake trackbacks. Some still find their way into your moderation queue.
Although on WordPress you can turn off pingbacks and trackbacks on new articles by simply going to Settings, Discussion page and Unchecking the box close to the ‘Allow link notifications from others (pingbacks and trackbacks) on new articles,’ it only works on new articles. Trackbacks and pingbacks will still be enabled on old posts. Whenever you link them on your blog, WordPress will add trackbacks to those posts.
How then can you easily disable trackbacks and pingbacks on these existing posts?
The following steps can help you disable trackbacks and pingbacks on existing posts on your WordPress Website.
First, visit Posts and go to the All Posts page. Then click on the Screen Options button at the top right corner of the screen.
Afterward, enter 999 next to ‘Number of items per page’ option and then click on apply button. The post’s list will reload, and now show up to 999 posts on the same page. Next, check the box close to title label to select all posts. After that, select ‘Edit’ from the Bulk Actions drop down. Next, click on ‘Apply’.
You will see a bulk edit box which displays all posts on that page. In the bulk edit box, search for the pings button and then change it. Do so by clicking on ‘Do not allow’. After that, you only need to click on the update button to save your changes.
WordPress will update, and the pings on all the selected posts will be turned off.
Do you have over 999 posts on the WordPress site, this works well too. Just go to the next page and repeat the process.
For those who want to disable trackbacks on their WordPress pages, you can still do so. However, you may not be able to disable them in bulk, so you will have to manually uncheck the option under the ‘Discussion’ tab on each page.
Though trackbacks and pingbacks are sometimes useful, the spam you will receive makes them problematic. It is, therefore, better if they are disabled. The above steps will help make your WordPress site Trackback and Pingback free!
